(AP) ? A second foreigner working with Doctors Without Borders died of his wounds in an attack in Somalia that also killed the group's country director, though the aid organization declared Friday that despite the risks it would still provide medical care in one of the world's most dangerous countries.

The deaths in Mogadishu of Philippe Havet, 53, from Belgium; and Andrias Karel Keiluhu, 44, from Indonesia, on Thursday underscore the risks that volunteers for the group encounter all over the world. Havet was country director for MSF, as the group is known by its initials in French. Keiluhu was a doctor.

The shootings were blamed on a Somali MSF logistics officer who had been fired the day before over allegations he had been stealing medicine. The gunman was arrested after the attack.

"MSF will be relocating some staff for security reasons, but remains committed to continuing our humanitarian work in Mogadishu and elsewhere in Somalia," the group said in a statement Friday. MSF said it was "shocked and saddened" by the deaths.

Doctors Without Borders was worried that Keiluhu could be targeted for further attack even while he was in the hospital in Mogadishu, clinging to life. An internal security report obtained by The Associated Press said that MSF asked the Somali government to protect Keiluhu.

"The clan of the former logistics officer is thought to have been making significant profits from the re-sale of stolen MSF-Belgium medicine, and there were concerns about further attempts on the doctor's life," the security report said.

Doctors Without Borders has endured deadly attacks before. In June 2004, five workers with the group ? two Afghans, a Norwegian, a Dutchman and a Belgian ? were killed by gunmen in Afghanistan. The group pulled out of Afghanistan shortly afterward. Three MSF members ? a Kenyan surgeon, a French logistics expert and a Somali driver ? died in Somalia in 2007 after a landmine attack that the group believes was premeditated.

The Somali employee, who ran the group's logistics, was dismissed from his job on Wednesday, then returned to the MSF compound on Thursday and opened fire with a pistol, according to a security guard there. Guards who had not been informed of the dismissal allowed the former employee onto the compound, the security guard said.

Havet died immediately. Keiluhu died later of his wounds later despite numerous blood transfusions, said nurse Abdiaziz Haji. Keiluhu had been shot several times in the torso, Haji said.

Somali Prime Minister Abdiweli Mohamed Ali said the perpetrator of the attack would be brought to justice "at the earliest opportunity." Ali offered condolences to the families of the two aid workers and thanked them "for their enormous contribution to making the lives of Somalis better."

"This year's response from the international aid community to the disaster in Somalia ought to be commended," he said, referring to the severe famine. "We welcome those who are willing to come to Somalia to work for the benefit of Somalis. This is a callous attack and a tragic example of an isolated incident and does not reflect any increased risk to international aid workers. I want to reassure the international aid community that we will do everything we can to enable foreign aid workers to operate safely in Somalia."

Despite Ali's assurances, the deaths underscore the dangers faced by aid workers trying to help residents in a country mired in two decades of anarchy.

In October, gunmen entered the world's largest refugee camp ? Dadaab, in Kenya but near the Somali border ? and snatched two Spanish women working for Doctors Without Borders. Their whereabouts are unknown. Dadaab is filled with nearly a half million Somali refugees fleeing conflict and hunger. Kenya used that kidnapping, as well as previous abductions of British and French women, to justify its military incursion into Somalia.

Only a few days later, gunmen abducted a 32-year-old female American aid worker in northern Somalia along with a Danish colleague from the de-mining unit of the Danish Refugee Council.

Many aid groups do not allow international aid workers in Somalia or limit the time they can spend there. Security in Mogadishu has improved this year but Thursday's shooting shows how dangerous it remains. Doctors Without Borders has been working in the Horn of Africa nation since 1991.

In its statement, the group described Havet as an "experienced emergency coordinator" who worked with MSF in Angola, Congo, Indonesia, Lebanon, Sierra Leone, South Africa and Somalia, beginning in 2000. Keiluhu had worked with the group since 1998, in Indonesia, Ethiopia, Thailand and Somalia.

Meanwhile, Kenya's military spokesman said Friday that five fighters from the militant group al-Shabab and one Kenyan soldier died in a clash in southern Somalia. Kenyan forces moved into Somalia in mid-October, declaring the cross-border kidnappings had created insecurity in neighboring Kenya.

Al-Shabab reported a far different version of events, saying on its official Twitter feed that its fighters burned three armored personnel carriers and killed 11 Kenyan soldiers in a complex ambush that began with the detonation of an improvised explosive device.

It was impossible to confirm either version of events.

The International Committee of the Red Cross said Friday that it has sent urgently needed medical supplies to southern Somalia "on both sides of the frontline" ? meaning on the Kenyan military side and the al-Shabab side.

"More than 100 wounded people, mainly civilians, reached the medical facilities during the most recent phase of the fighting," said Randi Jensen, an ICRC nurse. "It has become very dangerous for patients to reach the few clinics available to them and we just don't know how many more wounded are still out there, desperately waiting to get help."

The ICRC urged both sides to ensure that civilians are not harmed during the fighting.

The United Nations refugee agency said a refugee leader in Dadaab was shot Thursday evening and died Friday. Commissioner Antonio Guterres said he regretted the killing of the chairperson of the Community Peace and Security Team in the Hagadera camp.

Mike Green Returns To Practice For Washington Capitals

Washington Capitals All-Star defenseman Mike Green returned to practice today for the first time since straining his groin Nov. 11, according to the Washington Post.

?I think I?m going to have to be cognizant of this for the rest of my career, probably,? Green told the Post. ?It?s something you?ve got to take care of, especially with hockey it?s such a common thing. It?s just maintenance right now, making sure I?m on top of my stuff and getting better. I don?t think I?ll be 100 percent for a long time, I?ve just got to get to that stage where I can play.?

There still is no timetable for Green?s return.

When Green last played the Washington Capitals were off to a strong 8-0 start. Since then, however, the club has gone 9-14 and has seen their head coach replaced. In eight games this season Green had three goals and three assists for six points.

Green, 26, played in just 49 games last year due to injury. In 2009-10 when he played in 75 games, he was one of the most productive defensemen in the league, tallying 19 goals and 57 assists for the Capitals.

U.S. considers request to admit Yemeni president for medical care

HONOLULU ? The White House has not yet formally decided whether to admit Yemen President Ali Abdullah Saleh to the United States for medical treatment, but Obama administration officials as recently as last week considered granting Saleh a visa, in part to "get him out of the region," a senior administration official said Tuesday.

One advantage the administration sees in letting Saleh come to the U.S. would be to remove from Yemen a symbol of the country's repression of its citizens and perhaps smooth the transition to new leadership, the official said.

"If he comes without a big entourage and he's in the hospital here, it does send a signal that he's really out. So that was the thinking," said the official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak publicly.

Saleh was injured when a bomb exploded in a mosque within the presidential compound in Sanaa last June.

The White House announced Sunday that the U.S. Embassy in Sanaa received a request from Saleh's office that he be allowed to travel to the U.S. for medical care.

"He was really badly injured, so there's a real medical need," the official said.

Yet Saleh's departure from the region might also be welcomed by pro-democracy demonstrators in Yemen because it would "send a signal that he's not next door," the official added.

Still, the request is a delicate one for the Obama administration. The U.S. risks angering the broader Yemeni population if it is seen as sheltering Saleh, who many in Yemen want punished for the government's harsh crackdown on demonstrators over the past year.

The administration is also mindful of history. In 1979, President Jimmy Carter permitted the shah of Iran, Reza Pahlavi, to enter the U.S. for medical attention. That decision was viewed as one of the causes of the Iranian street protests that led to the attack on the U.S. Embassy and the capture of American hostages.

Asked if the shah's case was a factor that weighs on Saleh's request for entry to the U.S., the administration official said: "Sure it's on people's minds. But we're trying to balance things here."

The White House has given no timetable for a decision on Saleh's request.

Josh Earnest, a White House spokesman, said in a statement that "U.S. officials are continuing to consider President Saleh's request to enter the country for the sole purpose of seeking medical treatment."

Low Volume Levels Driving You Nuts with the Galaxy Nexus? Volume+ is Here to Save the Day

??

If there was one complaint that we have seen on numerous occasions and has actually affected our experience personally, it?s the low volume issue on the Galaxy Nexus. It?s tough to tell if this was Google or Samsung?s doing, but one thing is clear, the external speaker just doesn?t get loud enough. That?s where Volume+ comes in to play, as recommended by a number of readers over the last week. While I?ll be diving into it throughout the day myself, I would?recommend?that you check out the comments and reviews for the app to see for yourself that this appears to be the second coming of some speaker-fied holy figure for G-Nexes. It?s fairly inexpensive as a paid app, just make sure you read the directions at first boot to understand what?s going on.

Unborn son's struggle inspires Christian singer (AP)

PERRYSBURG, Ohio ? Told that his unborn son had only half a heart and little chance to survive, the lead singer of the Christian rock band Sanctus Real began pouring his fears and doubts into music.

The songs were meant to comfort his family while they searched for answers and sought to understand God's role during the months before and after the baby's birth that were filled with surgeries and life-threatening complications.

It didn't take long for him to realize that his words needed to be shared so that others struggling with life would know they're not alone.

What came out of the heartache was "Every Falling Tear," a solo album that's meant to touch and console during the hardest of times.

"People want to know that their pain has a purpose," said Matt Hammitt, one of the founding members of Sanctus Real, a band with two Grammy-nominated albums since 2008.

"That's the biggest part of sharing our story," he said. "That there is a purpose."

Hammitt and his wife, Sarah, knew something was wrong minutes after finding out during an ultrasound in April 2010 that their third child would be a boy, following two girls. They saw the sorrow on their doctor's face even before she spoke.

Doctors later confirmed the baby had a rare congenital heart defect called hypoplastic left heart syndrome, which causes the left side of the heart to be severely underdeveloped. For five months, the couple contemplated all of the possible procedures and treatments while weighing the odds of what could go wrong.

Their baby would face multiple surgeries and an uncertain future at best.

They also didn't know how to deal with a flood of emotions ? the anger, the doubt, the feeling of being alone. Hammitt, 32, decided he needed to tell God how he was feeling, so he started writing songs about their journey.

"I began writing about all that I was learning about struggle and faith," he said.

Each song tells of a moment or a series of events leading to the baby's birth ? there's a father's fear of holding back his love for a son he may never know and a mother's hope of finding peace in the midst of despair.

"I wanted to write songs that would speak him someday about how much his father loved him no matter how long or short his life would be," Hammitt said, his voice trailing off.

The album released in September was his first solo work. On tour during the fall with the band, he included the song "All of Me" in their sets. It starts: "Afraid to love, something that could break. Could I move on if you were torn away?"

Hammitt was a high school sophomore when he and guitarist Chris Rohman and drummer Mark Graalman started the band 15 years ago. They've stayed together, playing in coffee shops, churches and now arenas.

Sanctus Real will be one of nearly a dozen Christian artists taking part in the Winter Jam tour that starts in January, with stops in 47 cities.

The song from "Every Falling Tear" that means the most to Hammitt is "Trust," a worship song that reminds people not to lose faith "even in the darkness, even in the questions, even when the hardest times of life are at hand."

The lyrics were born out of a time when Hammitt was feeling isolated and alone.

"Sometimes we need to be reminded of the truth," he said. "And for me, the truth is that I trust God."

Bowen Matthew Hammitt was born on Sept. 9, 2010. His first open heart surgery came four days later and the next night he went into cardiac arrest. A team of doctors and nurses spent an hour performing CPR until they were able to revive him and get him on life support.

Complications and a stroke kept him in the hospital in Ann Arbor, Mich., for just over two months.

While there, the couple played demos of the songs Hammitt had written "so Bowen could hear his dad's voice," his wife said. Night-shift nurses often turned up the music when most families would leave for the evening.

"They felt it was good for all the babies to be soothed," Sarah said. "We'd come back in the morning and it'd be really loud."

Hammitt recorded the songs for the album soon after the family brought Bowen home to suburban Toledo. His only unease was that they might be critiqued like any other work.

"Originally I just wanted them recorded for us at the hospital," he said. "I realized they're meant to comfort other people too."

So far, the response has been what he hoped for. They've even received notes from parents who've played the songs at their children's funerals.

Now, the Hammitts want to take their work a step further by starting the Whole Hearts Foundation, a source of financial, emotional and spiritual help for families with children suffering from congenital heart defects. They see the foundation becoming their life's work.

"It's amazing to see even beyond the album what's come out of this," Hammitt said. "We had a vision in the hospital, how can we help other families, let them know they're not alone."

Bowen, who turned 1 in September, faces one more surgery now slated for 2013 to repair his heart. Eventually, he'll likely need a new heart before he reaches middle age.

He's growing, but not as fast as doctors would like. Sarah watches him closely for any signs of heart failure. He only has a single ventricle pumping oxygen to his body and lungs so she looks to see if he sweats when he eats or if his skin turns blue or red.

When Matt brought him downstairs after a nap, a look of worry crossed her face when she saw that his hair was matted with sweat. But it turned out there was no cause for concern.

"We know at any moment things could change even though he's stable now," Sarah said. "It's ultimately God's will."

Pakistan Army Seeks President?s Ouster

Sources within Pakistan?s Army today confirm that their leadership is ?fed up? with President Asif Ali Zardari, and are hoping to see him removed from power, though they are hoping to find a way to do this without a military coup.

Military coups are remarkably common in Pakistan?s history, but current military chief Gen. Parvez Kayani is relatively unique in his opposition to military intervention in civilian government operations.

The report that Zardari was behind the ?coup memo? appears to be the straw that broke the camel?s back for the military. The report claimed Zardari was the source of a letter to US military commander Admiral Michael Mullen, seeking his help in ousting much of the Pakistani military?s leadership.

Prime Minister Yousef Raza Gilani condemned the reports, and demanded that the military submit itself to the current civilian government, saying that the current system was ?unacceptable? and that the military could not continue to operate as a ?state within a state.?

Republican Presidential Candidates on Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae (ContributorNetwork)

According to a CNN report, Newt Gingrich started a consulting company after he left Congress, the Gingrich Group, and was paid $1.6 million to $1.8 million for consulting Freddie Mac. Due to the fact many believe mortgage lenders Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae were partly responsible for the collapse of the U.S. housing market, the candidates seeking the Republican presidential nomination were asked for their opinions on this issue and corruption in Washington, in general.

Here is what they said, according to a debate transcript provided by the American Presidency Project:

* Newt Gingrich: "Barney Frank was in public office with direct power over Freddie Mac. He exploited that power just as Chris Dodd was in public office when he got special bargains from Countrywide, a firm that went broke. They were using power. I was a private citizen, engaged in a business like any other business. I worked for years with Habitat for Humanity. I think it's a good conservative principle to try to find ways to help families that are right at the margin learn how to budget, learn how to take care of a house, learn how to buy a house. And I'm not going to step back from the idea that in fact we should have as a goal, helping as many Americans as possible be capable of buying homes. And when you look for example at electric membership co-ops, and you look at credit unions, there are a lot of government sponsored enterprises that are awfully important and do an awfully good job."

* Ron Paul: "Well (Gingrich) has a different definition of the private sector than I have. Because it's a GSE, government sponsored enterprise. That's completely different ? the worst kind of economy. You know, pure private enterprise, more closely probably to what Gov. Romney is involved with, but if it's government-sponsored, it's a mixture of business and government. It's very, very dangerous. Some people say, if it goes to extreme, it becomes fascism, because big business and big government get together."

* Michele Bachman: "We know that (Gingrich) cashed paychecks from Freddie Mac. That's the best evidence that you can have, over $1.6 million. And, frankly, I am shocked listening to the former speaker of the House, because he's defending the continuing practice of Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. There's a big difference between a credit union and Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. And they were the epicenter of the mortgage financial meltdown. I was trying to see these two entities put into bankruptcy because they, frankly, need to go away, when the speaker had his hand out and he was taking $1.6 million to influence senior Republicans to keep the scam going in Washington, D.C. That's absolutely wrong. We can't have as our nominee for the Republican Party someone who continues to stand for Freddie Mac and Fannie Mae. They need to be shut down, not built up."

* Mitt Romney, as reported by the Huffington Post: "One of the things that I think that people recognize in Washington is that people go there to serve the people and then they stay there to serve themselves. ... By the way, a very different number ($1.6 million) than (Gingrich) said in the first debate. He said $300,000 and he was there as an historian."

Oil price jumps more than 3 percent (AP)

NEW YORK ? Oil prices soared on promising economic news out of Europe and the U.S.

Benchmark crude on Tuesday rose $3.24, or 3.5 percent, to $97.29 per barrel in New York. Brent crude, which is used to price foreign oil that's imported by U.S. refineries, rose $2.72, or 2.6 percent, to $106.36 per barrel in London.

Major stock indexes were up more than 2 percent in afternoon trading.

Prices climbed on encouraging news about the global economy. Germany reported that business and consumer confidence rose unexpectedly in December, and Spain's borrowing costs plummeted in a debt auction as the country promised more austerity measures to resolve its debt problems.

In the U.S. retailers said sales jumped last week, while the government reported a surge in apartment construction and building permits in November.

If consumer spending and construction activity continue to grow, demand for oil will likely follow.

Retail gasoline prices fell by less than a penny Tuesday to a national average of $3.21 per gallon, according to AAA, Wright Express and Oil Price Information Service.

A gallon of regular has dropped more than 77 cents since its peak near $4 per gallon this year. Drivers are still paying about 23 cents more per gallon than they did a year ago. The national average in 2011 is expected to be the highest ever at above $3.50 per gallon.

In other energy trading, heating oil rose 6.31 cents to $2.8435 per gallon, and gasoline futures rose 7.50 cents to $2.5641 per gallon. Natural gas was essentially flat at $3.098 per 1,000 cubic feet.

No. 1 Syracuse beats NC State 88-72 (AP)

RALEIGH, N.C. ? Dion Waiters scored a career-high 22 points to help No. 1 Syracuse beat North Carolina State 88-72 on Saturday.

Scoop Jardine added 16 points for the Orange (11-0), including a pair of 3-pointers during an 11-2 spurt that finally gave them some cushion after the Wolfpack fought back from a 17-point deficit late in the first half. Waiters also came up big during that run, starting it by knocking down his own 3-pointer to answer one by Scott Wood that brought N.C. State (6-4) within 63-61.

Waiters also jumped a pass and raced in for a dunk, then Jardine closed the spurt with another 3 to push the lead to 74-63 with 6:41 left.

It was a good road test for Syracuse, which was playing for the first time as No. 1 this season ? as well as its first game outside its home state.

The Orange trailed by eight early before Waiters scored 10 points during a game-turning 23-0 run that silenced a rowdy sellout crowd and helped Syracuse take a 47-33 halftime lead. But the Wolfpack charged out of halftime with a 13-1 run to get back in it and even twice tied the game to re-energize the home crowd ? only to see Waiters and Jardine knock down huge shots to take back control.

C.J. Williams scored a career-high 25 points for N.C. State, which has frequently had nearby rivals Duke and North Carolina come into Raleigh with a No. 1 ranking. But this was the first time a nonconference No. 1 had come here since February 1979 and just the second time in program history, creating a far more lively environment than usual for a Christmas-time matchup.

Kris Joseph scored 21 points for Syracuse, which shot 57 percent and hit 11 of 25 3-point tries. N.C. State was even better at 58 percent and made 7 of 14 3s, but the Wolfpack committed 19 turnovers that led to 25 points for Syracuse. In addition, Waiters' huge scoring day helped the Orange reserves outscore the Wolfpack reserves 46-4 for the game.

N.C. State fell to 5-26 against No. 1 teams, with its last win coming in 2004 against Duke.

Video: Holidays shoppers suffer from buyers? remorse

>> record breaking sales this holiday season may be giving way to record breaking returns. some of the people who rushed to the stores as early as thanksgiving for big discounts are returning the gifts to get the cash back because they need it. according to the national retail federation , returns cost stores 10 cents for every dollar earn and that is an increase from last year. a retail writer for the associated press. i heard holiday hangover, buyer's remorse. when we look at the video, people were grabbing things that maybe they didn't need or want, but got caught up in the madness.

>> right. they got caught up in the 60% and when they brought the merchandise back to their house, they realized they didn't need it and it was denting their bank account .

>> that's incredible. we had several conversations and i believe it was one of the gut checks on the show. we said people talk about hard times , but they're running out with a wii or nintendo in their hands. i don't want to stand in the way of anyone's happiness, but these are tough economic times .

>> what's happening is three things. people are getting too caught up with the bargains out there. they are realizing they spent too much. number two, stores were lenient with the returns. they started becoming lenient two years ago. number three, i talked to a number of shoppers and they all say you know what, i'm buying and i bring it home , but i keep looking for the better deal and i will return it.

>> absolutely. there some stores right now on their second round of discounts, especially places that sell clothing where they reduce the prices and they are on the second round. if you bought it, you should get your money back.

>> i talked to lots of shoppers who said they return something to get a cheaper brand or something different because it's cheaper. you really see this reluctance to spend.

>> absolutely. thank you very much. we will see what happens after this holiday stuff dies

Urban Airship Says Its Push Notifications Work On Kindle Fire (Which It Found Out By Accident)

gunbros-kindleHere's a funny story: Urban Airship, a backend service provider for mobile developers, recently discovered that its push notifications offering works on Amazon's new Kindle Fire...by accident. Although the company makes an Android push client called Helium, it had no clue that those notifications would also work on Amazon's Kindle Fire out of the box. The company only found out after some developers started integrating the push mechanism into their own apps. Surprise!

Former GOP Congressman Says Gingrich 'Evil' and a Liar (ContributorNetwork)

COMMENTARY | Former New York congressman Guy Molinari has a few things to say about former Speaker of the House and current presidential hopeful Newt Gingrich -- none of them nice. He speaks from experience, having worked with the presidential candidate in the 80s, a few years prior to the Gingrich becoming Speaker of the House. And Molinari bluntly states that Gingrich is "evil" and a liar, according to CNN.

"Evil is a tough word, but frankly I can't think of a better word that describes what he is all about," said Molinari, who now works as an adviser to the Mitt Romney presidential campaign. "He is an evil person. That's the way he is. He'll lie; he'll do anything to get his way."

And there is definitely some truth to that. Take, for instance, Gingrich's complete twisting of the truth to brand the Obama administration as reckless with taxpayer dollars just so he can become the Republican nominee for president. Politifact published a piece on Dec. 1 that parsed a Gingrich claim that not only was President Obama the "best food stamp president in history" but that food stamps could now be used for anything, like trips to Hawaii. Even millionaires were getting food stamps, according to the former Speaker. Politifact labeled Gingrich's claims "Pants On Fire," their worst branding for lies and misleading statements.

And what about his lobbying his fellow Republicans after leaving Congress? He says he wasn't a lobbyist -- because he was never registered as a lobbyist -- but currying favor for corporations and financial institutions like Freddie Mac certainly seems like lobbying by another name.

No one has profited more from being a congressman says the 83-year-old Molinari. " You look at the stories about how much money he's made, lobbying really, he says it wasn't. It sure as hell was lobbying."

Molinari, who admits to holding a grudge against Gingrich from their congressional days together when the then representative from Georgia leveraged him out of his position on the House Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee, added, "Those of us that know him have a duty as Americans to come forward and relate the problems that we experienced ourselves and hope that the people will begin to understand what he's really all about, and then pick somebody else."

But will they? The latest Rasmussen Reports national presidential preference poll placed Gingrich 21 points ahead of Mitt Romney among Republican voters.

The words come in advance of Gingrich's four-day New York visit. One of his stops will be in Staten Island, where Molinari was borough president for 11 years.

"This man is not a good person,... and I just hope that the people in this country recognize that fact and do not vote for him," said Molinari. "I'd like them to vote for Mitt Romney but if not Romney let them vote for somebody else, but heaven's to Betsy not Newt Gingrich."

Also lending credence to Molinari's condemnation of Gingrich was the manner in which Gingrich left office in early 1999. He resigned under a cloud after having orchestrated the congressional gridlock that caused the longest government shutdown in history and after being sanctioned for ethics violations by the House of Representatives, which was then controlled by Republicans. His violation? Lying to the Ethics Committee itself.

Perhaps "evil" and liar aren't such "tough" words after all. Perhaps they're just uncomfortably close to the truth.

Nigeria anti-gay marriage bill risks AIDS funding (AP)

LAGOS, Nigeria ? A bill originally designed to outlaw gay marriage in Nigeria likely has consequences far beyond its initial scope ? criminalizing gay groups and organizations could jeopardize millions of dollars of Western aid geared toward stopping the spread of HIV and AIDS in Africa's most populous nation.

Though an oil-rich nation, Nigeria likely cannot afford to scorn foreign aid in the fight against HIV/AIDS, experts say. Nigeria has the continent's second highest number of people living with the disease, says the United Nations. More than 3 million people are infected with the disease and many do not know their status, according to U.N. estimates.

"There are about 400,000 people on anti-retrovirals in Nigeria at the moment and 95 percent of those are paid for by donor funds," Nigerian public health physician and health blogger Chikwe Ihekweazu told The Associated Press.

Gay sex has been banned in Nigeria, a nation of more than 160 million people, since colonial rule by the British. Gays and lesbians face open discrimination and abuse in a country divided by Christians and Muslims who almost uniformly oppose homosexuality. In the areas in Nigeria's north where Islamic Shariah law has been enforced for about a decade, gays and lesbians can face death by stoning.

Under the proposed law passed by Senate this week, couples who marry could face up to 14 years each in prison. Witnesses or anyone who helps couples marry could be sentenced to 10 years behind bars. The bill also punishes the "public show of same-sex amorous relationships directly or indirectly" with ten years in prison.

A newly added portion of the bill, leveling 10 years in prison for those found guilty of organizing, operating or supporting gay clubs, organizations and meetings, worries advocates in Nigeria. They fear the law could be used against groups providing aid for HIV and AIDS outreach programs that traditionally consider gay men as an at-risk group.

"We work with them trying to reduce their risk factors, trying to make them more healthy and have safer sex practices," said Meyiwa Ede of the donor-funded public health organization Society for Family Health. "If we can't work with them anymore, then they are vulnerable."

But lawmakers playing to the deeply religious nation's dislike of gays and lesbians have said donor nations who threaten to cut aid over the bill can keep their assistance, putting at risk the lives of people reliant on anti-retroviral drugs.

The U.S. and U.K. governments funnel huge sums of money into Nigeria for AIDS and HIV outreach. The U.S. government, under the United States' President Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief, has given an average of $308 million dollars a year to groups working in HIV prevention, treatment, and support, according to the U.S. Consulate in Lagos.

The U.K. government spends an average of $31 million dollars a year on HIV/AIDS programs in Nigeria, the Abuja office of the U.K.'s Department for International Development said.

Through local partners, the funding reaches heterosexuals, as well as gays and lesbians to combat the spread of HIV and AIDS. Heterosexual sex accounts for 80 percent of HIV transmissions in Nigeria, said the country's National Agency for the Control of AIDS in a recent report.

U.K. Prime Minister David Cameron recently threatened to cut aid to African countries who discriminate against gays and lesbians. Advocates fear that could include the HIV and AIDS funding.

Statements from the U.S. and U.K. say both governments are watching the bill closely, but declined to comment further on how it may affect their outreach.

President Goodluck Jonathan promised the United Nations General Assembly in June that his administration was "committing to increase national ownership of HIV and AIDS responses" and to make those responses inclusive. However, six months later, little has changed in a country that makes no attempt to reach gay and lesbian communities.

Nigeria's Health Minister Onyebuchi Chukwu told AP that the bill outlawing gay groups would not affect state-funded HIV and AIDS programs if it were to become law. The health ministry has no programs specifically targeting these communities, said spokeswoman Rekia Zubairu.

Rights groups say the lawmakers' resolve to pass the bill reflects widespread homophobia in Nigeria, but it also shows their disconnect from working-class Nigerians, regardless of their sexual orientation.

"They have the resources to go abroad for treatment, with their big salaries, so they don't give a hoot about ordinary people," gay rights organizer Dorothy Akenova said. "The majority of Nigerians are the ones who will suffer for it."

The bill must still be passed by Nigeria's House of Representatives and signed by President Jonathan before becoming law.

The Cain effect: Will GOP voters focus more on 'character'? (The Week)

New York ? As alleged adulterer Herman Cain considers exiting the presidential race, candidates' personal conduct may get more scrutiny, for better or worse

After damning allegations of a 13-year extra-marital affair surfaced Monday, erstwhile GOP frontrunner Herman Cain is "reassessing" whether he will continue his presidential bid ? and several pundits are all-but-certain that he'll drop out. If so, the reasons for his exit could change the race more than his actual departure. Will Cain's wearyingly long list of alleged infidelities make "character" more of an issue in the Republican presidential race?

Cain's flailing rivals would be crazy not to seize this opportunity: This is the perfect chance for apparently more virtuous contenders like Michele Bachmann and Rick Santorum to "restate their case to values voters," making these new developments as much about Herman Cain as they are about Newt Gingrich, who also has a spotty relationships record, says Jennifer Rubin at The Washington Post. "So long as the discussion is about the personal qualities of candidates and their innate abilities and judgment, Cain ? and Gingrich, too ? are in an awkward spot."
"Once again, voters must reassess Herman Cain's character"

"Private conduct" is irrelevant: When allegations of Cain's extra-marital affair surfaced, "my brief reaction was? so?" says Robert Schlesinger at U.S. News and World Report. No link exists between private conduct and policy outcomes, and voters who think otherwise are mistaken. "Franklin D. Roosevelt and Martin Luther King, to name two, were unfaithful and still managed to be two of this nation's more important leaders." There are many worrisome problems with Cain's candidacy. "Marital infidelity is not one of them."
"Herman Cain affair allegations are irrelevant"

The partisan media won't be able to help itself: Thanks to the media's bias against conservatives, character will become a bigger issue than ever, says Verum Serum. The accusations against Cain are no worse than those leveled against Bill Clinton, John Edwards, Ted Kennedy, or John F. Kennedy. The only real difference between those "progressive champions" and Cain is "party affiliation." They all escaped Cain-levels of media vilification because "only one side of the aisle is expected to abide by the rules."
"Cain is reassessing his campaign"

Protests against military rule cloud Egypt election (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? Protesters rallied again in Cairo on Sunday to try to evict Egypt's ruling generals, in a trial of strength that has muddied the run-up to Egypt's first vote since a popular revolt deposed former leader Hosni Mubarak.

The parliamentary election that gets under way on Monday and Tuesday is the first step in a transfer to civilian rule, promised by the ruling army council that replaced Mubarak.

The course of transformation in Egypt, the Arab world's most populous nation, will reverberate across a region where a new generation demanding democratic change has risen up against autocratic governments that have ruled for decades.

Some Egyptians yearn for stability after a week of bloodshed that has killed 42 people and wounded more than 2,000, preferring for now to let the generals run a nation whose prolonged political turmoil has thrust the economy deeper into crisis.

But the demonstrators gathered in Cairo's Tahrir Square want the council to make way for a civilian interim administration immediately. They reject its promise to complete the handover by July and its choice of 78-year-old Kamal Ganzouri to form the next cabinet.

Activists had called for a mass rally to pile pressure on the generals, and by mid-afternoon there were thousands in the square, hub of the unrest that toppled Mubarak.

Field Marshal Mohamed Hussein Tantawi, head of the council, said the army would ensure security at the polling booths.

"We are at a crossroads. There are only two routes, the success of elections leading Egypt toward safety or facing dangerous hurdles that we in the armed forces, as part of the Egyptian people, will not allow," he declared.

Abdel Moneim Aboul Futuh, an Islamist presidential candidate who opposes military rule, said: "The nation is larger than Field Marshal Tantawi and Lieutenant General Sami Enan and the military council. A government with revolutionary leadership must be formed to meet the demands of Tahrir Square."

State television quoted Tantawi as saying the army's role in the new constitution would be unchanged: to protect the nation.

The outgoing cabinet angered many Egyptians by floating proposals that would have given the army sweeping national security powers and protected it from civilian scrutiny.

The generals have received tacit support from Islamist parties eager that nothing should disrupt voting in the first of three rounds of an election in which they expect to do well.

In what appeared to be a gesture to the protesters, the ruling generals agreed to the formation of "a civilian consultative council" that would work with the military and the government to run the country.

The move fell short of the protesters' demand for the generals to hand all power to a civilian council.

GANZOURI'S RECORD

Bassam Sharaf, among protesters outside parliament, said the objection to Ganzouri was not his age, but the policies he pursued as prime minister under Mubarak from 1996 to 1999.

"Two-thirds of the ministers that Ganzouri appointed in his day are now in Tora prison," he said, referring to Mubarak-era officials accused of corruption and other offences who were put on trial after an uprising swept Mubarak from power in February.

Alarmed by Egypt's latest bout of unrest, the United States and the European Union have condemned the "excessive force" used by the authorities and urged a swift handover to civilian rule.

Some protesters favor Mohamed ElBaradei, former head of the U.N. nuclear watchdog, who has offered to drop his campaign for the presidency and to lead a government of national unity.

ElBaradei is respected among pro-democracy campaigners and has a high international profile, but many Egyptians view him as out of touch because he spent much of his career abroad.

MUSLIM BROTHERHOOD

Mohamed Badie, leader of the once-banned Muslim Brotherhood, which hopes the election will catapult it into a strong place in mainstream politics, offered Ganzouri qualified support, depending on the powers and makeup of his cabinet.

He said conspirators were behind the unrest. "There are powers inside and outside Egypt that don't want stability for Egypt or development, and this is something that is being pushed and paid for," he said late on Saturday.

Al-Gama'a al-Islamiya group, which has now renounced violence but led an armed insurgency against Mubarak during Ganzouri's government in the 1990s, said it would not join the protesters in Tahrir, criticizing them for trying to "force a certain prime minister on Egypt," a reference to ElBaradei.

The Salafi Islamist Nour Party said it would meet Ganzouri in the next few days to propose names for his cabinet.

Protesters appear split over the election. Some do not trust the military to ensure a free vote. Others say the poll should not be a casualty of the campaign against military rule.

"This is one thing, that is something else. Everyone will be in the polling stations come Monday," said Abdul Aal Diab, a 46-year-old state employee protesting in Tahrir.

"Why are you so sure?" interrupted Mustafa Essam, 27. "I won't go. I have no faith in anyone."

Groups chanted slogans against the generals in Tahrir as people wandered among banners, tents and tea stalls with chairs and tables that lent the protest an air of permanence.

The complex, drawn-out election to parliament's lower house concludes in early January. Voting for the upper house and the presidency will follow before the end of June. A confusing array of candidates and parties, and fears of bullying, bribery and violence at polling stations set voters a daunting challenge.

The British government urged the Egyptian authorities to make sure the elections were fair, credible and free from violence.

"What happens in Egypt will be crucial for the whole region and the world will be watching closely in the days and months ahead," British Foreign Secretary William Hague said.

Ahmed Abdul Fattah, 40, said he would vote for the moderate Islamist Wasat Party, but with no enthusiasm for what he said were poorly timed elections. "Why should we have them? So the Muslim Brotherhood can dominate us?" he asked.

Michelle Williams talks Marilyn, Matilda and musicals (Reuters)

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) ? Michelle Williams takes on the iconic role of Marilyn Monroe in the indie film "My Week with Marilyn." Currently in theaters, the film is based on Colin Clark's book of the same name and chronicles his time spent working with Monroe while she was in England shooting the romantic comedy "The Prince and the Showgirl" in 1956.

Williams sat down with Reuters to talk about portraying Monroe, the film, shooting her current role of Glinda the good witch in Sam Raimi's "Oz: The Great and Powerful" and her six-year-old daughter Matilda with late actor Heath Ledger.

Q: Did you have an awareness of Marilyn Monroe and her starpower when you were younger?

A: "I was interested in her, but then I kind of lost track of her over the last 10 years or so. I had a poster of her up in my room. It wasn't a picture of her as the icon, it was a picture of her looking like an ordinary joyful girl. So I definitely had some kind of connection. (Working on this film) reignited whatever initial, sort of, attraction I had to her when I was a teenager."

Q: Did you do your own singing in the film?

A: "Yes and my mother is going to be so excited when she sees this. She always wanted me to sing and dance. I had so much fun doing that!"

Q: So doing a musical could be in the cards for you?

A: "I would love to. What's so liberating about singing and dancing is that it turns your head off. You coast on this wave of muscle memory. You literally can't think while you're performing. There's a kind of transcendence to it. I think maybe that's why Marilyn was so especially talented at it. Her singing and dancing are unparalleled and her musical numbers are just breathtaking."

Q: The film used many of the same locations in shooting "Prince and the Showgirl." Did that add to the production?

A: "There was a lot of synchronicity. We shot in the actual Parkside house (that Marilyn lived in). My dressing room at Pinewood was Marilyn's actual dressing room. That was so special. The stage where she shot that song and dance number was the stage where I shot mine. So many of the props in our movie were in the original 'Prince and the Showgirl' movie."

Q: Did it ever feel ghostly?

A: "Well, it's all energy. And it's what you make of it. I like to make things out of nothing! (laughs) I like to spin things out of thin air, so that stuff works for me."

Q: Did you wear wigs for the part, or grow out your hair?

A: "I wore wigs, but I had to keep my hair really bleached underneath because it would show through the wigs. My eyebrows had to be dark and they were reshaped. You go through so many grotesque phases making movies (laughs). I never really feel quite like myself. I just feel like a mutant -- always halfway in between some other person and myself. I don't know what belongs to me and what doesn't!"

Q: After filming ended was it hard to let go of Marilyn?

A: "I think when you work in a way that really gets under your skin, its not an easy break. You make a little extra room for these people that you play and then they leave. You're left with this hollow space. I wish I could play her again."

Q: Does your daughter Matilda come to set?

A: "She comes with me everywhere."

Q: How do you balance getting into character and then going home at the end of the day to be a mom?

A: "What works for me is to have a commute from where we live to where I work. So that in the morning, I leave the house behind and walk clean and fresh into my professional life. And then the same thing on the way home. I find that a 20 or 30 minute commute makes a kind of passageway for me that I need."

Q: You're currently shooting "OZ," playing Glinda. Matilda must love coming to that set.

A: "It's the best thing professionally that's happened to us. It has brought her on board my work in a way that wasn't possible in a movie like 'Marilyn' or 'Blue Valentine.' On those, there was no space for a kid to come visit and be a kid. (With 'Oz') she comes every single day after school because it's like a playground. She says, 'There's only one good witch and it's my mom.' She's very excited about it."

Q: It's interesting that you said the project was the best thing to happen professionally to "us" not "me."

A: "Definitely. Every choice that I make is about how it's going to affect our life -- where it films, how long it is, what else is going on in her year, what's the last job I did, how much time I've had off in between, how much time we had to really deeply connect and how long can we sustain a period of time where I'm working. So when 'Oz' came along, it was very clear to me that it was the right decision for us."
