Kate Winslet: 'Titanic' love song makes me sick

Rick Lynch / AP

Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet have gone on and on in "Titanic."

By Us Weekly

Don't tell Celine Dion, but Kate Winslet doesn't exactly get verklempt over "My Heart Will Go On."

The Oscar-winning actress, 36, says the classic "Titanic" theme song beloved by some and loathed by others seems to follow and "haunt" her wherever she goes, nearly 15 years after the blockbuster film and soundtrack were released.

"I wish I could say, 'Oh listen, everybody! It's the Celine Dion song!' But I don't," Winslet, now promoting the new 3-D version of Titanic, confessed to MTV News. "I just have to sit there, you know, kind of straight-faced with a massive internal eye roll."

PHOTOS: Kate Winslet's totally sexy style

The emotional, chart-topping ballad makes her "feel like throwing up," the "Mildred Pierce" star said. "It's thrilling for people to surprise me with the Celine Dion song."

The torture got even worse recently when she did an Italian TV talk show, and "they actually had a live pianist who started gently playing the theme song."

PHOTOS: LOL! Funniest, meanest celeb quotes

Winslet was "rather severely urged to go and sing it as though I had in fact sung it myself in the first place," she explained.

(French-Canadian sing Dion, 44, of course, did the honors on the Oscar-winning hit.)

PHOTOS: Celeb feuds

"It was like, 'No! I'm not going to do that.' They're like, 'Oh no, come on it will be funny.'" she said of the awkward song request. "No, it won't be funny. At all. And I'm not going to."

Do you think "My Heart Will Go On" is a great song?

How to Make a Great Photography Portfolio

Even if you're fresh out of photography school, one of the things you must have if you plan to be a professional photographer is a photography portfolio. Though some photography schools offer classes in putting together your portfolio, it's not necessarily the norm. When I graduated from photography school, I had a wealth of great pictures to draw upon, but had no idea how to best showcase my work. I was lucky enough to have one of my photography school teachers share some tips with me that I've since consistently followed. Here are some of the tips that have helped me consistently put together great portfolios.

Less is More

One mistake that many photographers do in putting together a portfolio is using too many photographs. Remember the rule "Less is More." That rule definitely applies here. In putting together a photography portfolio, you'll definitely want to keep it simple.

Aim to have about 14-20 photographs in your portfolio, and keep in mind that if someone wants to see more, they'll have no problems asking. You want to leave them wanting, not leave them wondering how many *&(#! photos they have left to sift through.

Put Your Best Foot Forward

In accordance with the less is more principle, you'll also want to make sure your chosen photographs are among your best. This may seem like it goes without saying, you're of course not going to put bad photographs in your portfolio, but sometimes, the truth is we don't always know which are the best in our own work. Though we can probably weed out the not so good from the great, it's hard to choose which are the best of the best. Get an opinion from another photographer you trust, and enlist them to help you narrow it down.

If you're in photography school, your teachers may also have some tips that can help you.

Show ?Em What You've Got

We all have various abilities and talents as photographers and drawing on those unique aspects is important. But one thing you'll want to avoid is having all your photographs all look alike. It's important to show diversity and range in your portfolio?this doesn't mean that you'll want your photos to look all over the place, but they should express different abilities of your capacity as a photographer

Start Off on the Right Foot

One great principle to follow in putting together your portfolio is starting off with your strongest images. In this case, you'll want your first image in your portfolio to be your second best photograph of the group. Why second best? You'll see.

End with a Bang

The last image in your portfolio should reinforce all the images that have come before and leave a lasting impression. You want to end with a bang, and ultimately leave your viewer with the best possible feeling about your work. This is where your best image should be placed.

The Middle Road

All remaining photographs should be placed between these two?yes, that's obvious, but how should they be arranged, you ask? From your first photograph, you'll want to slowly move towards less impacting images, until you reach the middle of the portfolio. From there, you'll want to build back up again, gradually increasing in impact until you reach your last and best piece of work.

Revisit and Rework

As a photographer, our works are constantly changing and improving, so don't let your portfolio get stale. Use these principles consistently, but always update your portfolio with new works that showcase how you've grown.

Even if you're still in photography school, it's not too early to start thinking about these things. Photography schools allow you the time you need to experiment and uncover your style as well, so don't be surprised if you're revamping your portfolio more than once. Even professional photographers sometimes have difficulty in putting together a portfolio that really showcases their work. Whatever stage you're at, use these tips to help you on your way to landing more jobs and shows. Your portfolio, after all, is your calling card.

Fossil find sheds light on how humans evolved to walk (+video)

A discovery in Ethiopia?of 3-million-year old foot bones that once belonged to a human relative suggests that human bipedalism evolved more than once.?

Lucy, it turns out, had company ? another prehuman that also walked but spent more of its time in trees.

Skip to next paragraph A few million years ago, our ancestors stopped climbing trees and started walking upright, on two feet. To work out how and when this happened, researchers look for fossils -- and recently they found a surprising set of foot bones in Ethiopia. The foot is about 3.4 million years old, making it roughly the same age as 'Lucy' and her species, Australopithecus afarensis. But while Lucy's species had feet much like modern humans, the new foot has an opposable big toe, like a chimp. So do the foot bones represent a new species of hominin? Watch the video and decide.

Until now, there was no proof of another human relative living around the same time as the species made famous by the Lucy skeleton. But a fossil discovery reveals there was another creature around 3 million years ago and it gives new insight into the evolution of a key human trait ? walking on two legs.

The creature came to light when an international team of researchers unearthed a partial foot in eastern Africa. Like Lucy, it walked upright, but had a grasping foot that it used to climb tree branches. Scientists said it's now clear that various human relatives experimented with upright walking.

"This is just another window into solving the problem of how we got from a primitive foot to the modern human foot," said Bruce Latimer of Cleveland's Case Western Reserve University, who helped discover the fossil remains.

Various hominin species have co-existed throughout human evolutionary history, but this is the first sign of another during Lucy's time.

So what was this tree-climbing and ground-dwelling creature? Scientists don't yet know because no skull or teeth have been recovered to make a determination. But it's clear the foot did not come from Lucy's species, Australopithecus afarensis.

It's rare to find prehuman feet because bones are fragile and don't preserve well. So American and Ethiopian scientists led by the Cleveland Museum of Natural History were excited when they excavated eight foot and toe bones in 2009 in the remote Afar region of Ethiopia, 30 miles north of where Lucy was discovered in 1974.

By analyzing the bone structure and dating the surrounding dirt, the team concluded the fragments came from the right forefoot of a human relative that lived 3.4 million years ago. While Lucy had humanlike feet, this creature was less advanced.

The discovery was detailed in Thursday's issue of the journal Nature. The authors did not name the new species because they know so little about it.

Parsing the Pill's impact on women's wage

    Tuesday, March 27, 2012

Although women continue to lag behind men in pay, the gender wage gap has narrowed considerably since the 1960s. Now a new University of Michigan study is the first to quantify the impact of the pill on women's labor market advances.

The study shows that roughly one-third of women's wage gains through the 1990s are due to the availability of oral contraceptives.

Published online this week by the National Bureau of Economic Research as a working paper, the study was conducted by U-M economist Martha Bailey and colleagues Brad Hershbein at U-M and Amalia Miller at the University of Virginia.

"We found that women who had early access to the pill in the 1960s and 1970s earned 8 percent more on average by the 1980s and 1990s than women without early access," said Bailey, an assistant professor of economics in the U-M College of Literature, Science, and the Arts and a research affiliate at the U-M Institute for Social Research.

Bailey and colleagues analyzed the careers of approximately 4,300 women, born from 1943 to 1954, using the National Longitudinal Survey of Young Women. These women varied in their legal ability to obtain the pill from their doctors between the ages of 18 and 21

"The difficulty of parsing the pill's effect on women's careers relates to the timing of its appearance," Bailey said. "By cause or coincidence, the pill's diffusion coincided with important changes in norms and ideas about women's work and the end of the baby boom."

Bailey and colleagues developed a novel analytic strategy to answer this question. After the U.S. Federal Drug Administration approved the pill in 1960, laws in different states placed different age limits on when women could legally obtain it. As these laws changed in almost every state in the country, largely due to reducing the legal voting age to 18, the inadvertent side-effect was that women could obtain the pill at younger ages. This meant that women no longer had to decide between looking for a mate (and the risk of pregnancy) and investing in their educations and careers. They could do both.

The researchers found that early access laws doubled contraceptive pill use among women between the ages of 18 and 20 ? precisely the ages affected by access laws ? but not beyond age 21, when the laws did not bind. Pill use by age 18 was 140 percent higher, and by age 20 was 43 percent higher than national mean use at those ages.

"As the pill provided younger women the expectation of greater control over childbearing, women invested more in their human capital and careers," Bailey said. "Most affected were women with some college, who benefitted from these investments through remarkable wage gains over their lifetimes."

Their analysis shows that nearly two-thirds of these pill-access induced gains in wages were due to increasing labor-market experience; another third came through to greater educational attainment and entry in non-traditionally female occupations.

But even these results may not do justice to the over-arching importance of the pill. "Our results may understate the pill's broader influence because they do not explore the effect of changes in access to the pill beyond age 20 and fail to capture the potentially large social multiplier effects," Bailey said. "The pill's availability likely altered norms and expectations about marriage and childbearing. It also likely affected the decisions of companies to hire and promote women."

Hamilton, ON (March 27, 2012) - Tracking health differences by ethnicity is the cornerstone of the new Chanchlani Research Centre at McMaster University.

The new centre is dedicated to understanding the genetic and environmental causes of common diseases among diverse cultural groups, women and the socially disadvantaged while providing innovative training to the next generation of health researchers.

The centre is funded by a $1 million donation from Vasu Chanchlani, an entrepreneur, philanthropist and founding member of the Canada India Foundation, and his wife, Jaya, a family physician in Brampton for more than 20 years. The couple has given an additional $250,000 to fund an award for an international scholar in the field.

A presentation and ribbon cutting ceremony this evening will open the research centre located in McMaster University's Michael G. DeGroote Centre for Learning and Discovery.

"This gift of philanthropists Vasu and Jaya Chanchlani provides significant opportunities for McMaster," said University President Patrick Deane. As health challenges are increasingly understood in a global context, focus on ethnic and local issues promises to bring benefit not only to those specific communities, but to humanity at large."

Dr. John Kelton, dean and vice-president of the Faculty of Health Sciences, agreed: "The Chanchlani Research Centre will be the home of some of our best work and our best people: We know the centre will produce meaningful, life-changing results."

In Canada, diabetes and early heart disease are found among increasing numbers of South Asians who have migrated here from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. In India alone, Type 2 diabetes affects 80 million people.

Chanchlani has said the goal of the centre is to "leverage the resources, passion and influence of people of South Asian origin by engaging them in a serious social cause that is afflicting people of South Asian origin around the world."

Director of the new centre is McMaster professor and research scientist Dr. Sonia Anand, a Canadian leader in the research of genetic and environmental causes of vascular disease.

"The Chanchlani gift will enable a group of innovative researchers with talent that ranges from genetics to social determinants to understand the causes and consequences of common diseases that afflict diverse ethnic populations, women, and the socially disadvantaged," she said.

Currently, Anand is leading the START (SouTh Asian birth cohort) study - which is studying two birth cohorts of South Asians in Southern Ontario and another in urban and rural India - to find out why central adiposity and diabetes are so prevalent among the South Asian population. She was recently funded by the Heart and Stroke Foundation and the Canadian Institutes of Health research to initiate a similar style birth cohort among the Aboriginal people of the Six Nations.

Anand received international attention with an earlier study which showed a diet high in fruits and vegetables appears to lessen the genetic risk of the 9p21 gene on heart disease. This led to the SAHARA (South Asian Heart Risk Assessment) study which is intended to find out if knowing about this gene motivates individuals at risk of a heart attack to change their habits.

Other guests include Aditya Jha, an Indo-Canadian entrepreneur, philanthropist and social activist who is chairman of the POA Educational Foundation which promotes education and entrepreneurship among less fortunate individuals and groups; and Dr. Budhendranauth Doobay, a Hamilton physician and spiritual leader to the South Asian community in Southern Ontario and various international aid organizations.

MIAMI — The Steve Aoki Experience hit Ice Palace in downtown Miami a little after 3:30 a.m. in the early Saturday hours, and the Dim Mak chairman didn't disappoint. He powered through a set loaded with new music and the madness that fans have come to love from his live shows.

In the lead-up to his Ultra Music Festival show slated for Sunday (March 25), Aoki treated the Ice Palace crowd to champagne showers and shots of Grey Goose. He also brought along some very special friends: Datsik, who'll hit the road this summer on Dim Mak Records' Deadmeat Tour; and Alan Strovich, who recently finished a dramatic dubstep remix of "Ladi Dadi." (One of Aoki's biggest tracks, his 2011 "Ladi" features singer Wynter Gordon.)

Many of the tracks Aoki played on Saturday were from Dim Mak's Miami Winter Music Conference sampler, which dropped 10 days ago on Beatport. Those included the banging new gems "Dance" from Spencer & Hill and Dirtyloud; "Turn Up the Volume" with Joachim Garraud and Autoerotique; and Aoki's smash tag-team with Tiësto on "Tornado."

It was a crazy show to say the least. And with his date on the Main Stage at Ultra just hours away, it proved to be an exciting prelude to what we predict will be one of the most impressive stage dives at UMF.

Tips For How To Best Avoid Failure With Commercial Real Estate ...

Think about long-term economic conditions before investing in real estate. Be prepared for large-scale inflation during the next couple of years. In the past, many leases had built-in clauses that made adjustments according to the Consumer Price Index, which protected signers from inflation. However, this is no longer common practice, which strips away one form of protection.

Always include emergency maintenance on your list of need to know things. The landlord in the building where you have your office will be able to provide emergency repair contact information for you. Keep a list of phone numbers close to you, and make sure you select companies that answer quickly. Create an emergency plan and ensure everyone in your unit knows where to find it, how to follow it, and what it entails.

Transactions for commercial property take more time, and are a lot more complex, than the process of buying a home. The added time and effort are crucial, however, to getting the return that you want on your investment.

Search for opportunities to buy larger commercial buildings if you want to invest in commercial real estate. It doesn?t take a lot more work than a smaller location, and it turns a greater profit over time.

If you are investing in an apartment complex, then you need to understand that a small complex may be more hassle than it is worth. In fact, it is often recommended by those with much experience to stick with complexes that only have above 10 units. Look into your unique situation to make the best decision.

When making a commercial real estate purchase, have well-defined goals in mind. Will you lease the property out or conduct business there yourself? It will help you more easily find an appropriate piece of property to purchase if you know exactly what you plan to do with the property after you acquire it.

See to it that you initially make use of the right type of financing. Loan products and commercial lenders are different than that of home loans. Commercial loan products actually offer some benefits that residential loans don?t. Because commercial property is usually more expensive than other property, the loan is going to be larger. This means the down payment you have to come up with needs to be larger. So it helps tremendously if you can locate the financing first in order to put together a down payment.

Check the company?s reputation for customer service before you deal with them. If not, you may eventually pay dearly for an easily avoided mistake.

If you are ready to sign a lease for your commercial property, be very cautious if the lease is only a standard form. Large real estate companies often slip in additional requirements or covenants into lease documents, which could be very long at times. By reading the document carefully, you can avoid the potential pain a standard commercial lease could cause.

Consider what youR actual goals are before you begin to invest in commercial real estate. You should write a list of which features are most important to you. For example, do you need a specific number of restrooms, a specific amount of square footage, or a conference room?

Do not hire a broker without finding out more about their past experience within commercial property. Make sure they have their own expertise in the area of your curiosity or it could be an endeavor wasted. With that broker, you also want to enter into exclusive agreements.

Now, you will now be more prepared when you are dealing with commercial real estate. If you felt prepared before, you surely must feel like a pro by now! Hopefully, the tips that you read gave some clues that will help you get started with your commercial real estate adventures, so that you can be successful with them.

President Obama has increased national debt by $5 TRILLION

President Barack Obama has increased the national debt by approximately $5 trillion since his inauguration. These figures are courtesy of the U.S. Treasury released this week. Under the Obama administration, the federal government's debt has increased by $15,824.21 for each of the 313,223,079 million people that the Census Bureau now estimates live in the U.S. This translates to $41,762.92 for each of the nation's 118,682,000 households.

As of the close of business on March 19, 2012, the debt had increased since Obama's inauguration by $4,947,361,319,191.81, slightly below the rounding point of $4.95 trillion.

LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) - On January 20, 2009, the day of Obama's inauguration, the federal government's debt was $10,626,877,048,913.08. As of Tuesday, March 20, 2012, it was $15,583,383,846,149.34, which represents an increase of $4,956,506,797,236.26 . rounding out to $5 trillion.

As of the close of business on March 19, 2012, the debt had increased since Obama's inauguration by $4,947,361,319,191.81, slightly below the rounding point of $4.95 trillion.

To illustrate, the $4,956,506,797,236.26 in new debt the U.S. government has accumulated since Obama has been in office is equal to all the debt the U.S. government accumulated between July 4, 1776, when the British colonies declared their independence until August 15, 1995, when Bill Clinton was in the third year of his first term.

In the first 1,156 days of Obama's presidency, the federal debt increased at an average rate of $4,287,635,637.75 per day. Were the debt to maintain that average daily rate of increase through the end of Obama's term on Jan. 20, 2013, the debt will have increased by $6,264,235,666,752.75 during Obama's term.

The total national debt did not exceed $6,264,235,666,752.75 until Oct. 29, 2002, during George W. Bush's first term. Obama, in just four years, will have increased the federal government's debt by more than all presidents from Washington through Clinton combined.

According to a Washington Post article, massive budget deficits and mushrooming pension and health-care entitlements increased the federal government's long-term obligations by $4.2 trillion in 2011 - more than three times the $1.3 trillion official figure for the federal budget deficit. Obama's $800 billion stimulus package, which benefited the public-employee unions that receive lucrative unfunded pensions and health benefits, will actually shrink the size of the economy in the long run, the Congressional Budget Office says, although it temporarily pumped up employment among government employees.

By contrast, two economists argue that it wiped out the jobs of a million private-sector employees by diverting money from the private sector to the public sector.

"Americans now owe $189,000 each in national debt and unfunded entitlements. That's 885 percent of our economy's size (or GDP), exceeding Greece's debts and unfunded liabilities, which amount to 875 percent of its economy (although Greece is worse off than the U.S. now since its economic growth is lower due to factors like greater corruption and a more rapidly-aging population, and its borrowing costs are higher)," the Opposing Views Web site writes.

How To Install Highland Plumbing In A Concrete Slab ? Web Online ...

Plumbing is in no way installed horizontally by way of a concrete slab-on-grade?a slab that is on the ground. All plumbing lines are operate beneath the slab at different depths and pitches in the soil. The lines then ?stub-out? vertically by way of the slab to enable for later connections to be made. The procedure to install your plumbing in a concrete slab is bodily demanding and mechanically exact. You ought to set up the plumbing to the exact specs detailed in your construction drawings.

    Guidelines

    1. Mark the place you will need to have to dig to place your plumbing by employing a tape measure and spray paint. Pay close attention to the measurements given in your building drawings on the place to track down each line beneath the concrete slab. Mark the true pipe lines with a spray paint line but also mark the place the pipes are to stub out of the slab with a ?X? positioned in a circle. Set this mark a handful of toes off the line that marks exactly where you will dig so you will not eliminate the mark where you excavate your pipe trench.

    3. Install your pipe and all connections in your pipe trenches. Make positive that the plumbing pipe is supported by pipe stands of the variety specified in your construction drawings. Offer a vertical link at the stub-out spots for every single pipe that should move by way of the slab. Make these stub-out pipes long ample to lengthen a minimum amount of 6 inches above the top rated of the concrete slab.

Diablo III launch day is May 15 ? Video Games Reviews, Cheats ...

All the rumors and speculation ends today. Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo III will launch on May 15 around the world.

May 15 will be the day you can head to a store, and most likely queue to purchase your copy. However, Blizzard is allowing you to bypass the hassle of doing that by offering a pre-purchase option via Battle.net. That will translate into a digital download on release day.

Alternatively, Diablo III is currently free if you sign up for the World of Warcraft Annual Pass, which commits you to a year of subscription for the MMO, but still allows you to pay monthly. That offer will end on May 1st, giving you some time to consider it instead of just purchasing Diablo III.

After many delays that saw the game?s release slip from 2011 into early 2012, and then mid-2012, the latest guess was an April 17 launch. However, Blizzard required a bit more time to get rid of the bugs and has settled on a mid-May release.

The fact it?s a worldwide release shows the confidence Blizzard has in its Battle.net back end as thousands of gamers will be installing the game and attempting to login on May 15. Usually a staggered launch is implemented so as not to overload the servers, but it looks like Blizzard believes it can cope.

With the release date now known gamers have one more decision to make: standard or collector?s edition. The standard copy will cost $60, where as the collector?s edition is $100. For that extra $40 you do get an art book, soundtrack CD, behind-the-scenes Blu-ray/DVD, and a copy of Diablo II along with its expansion pack. Tempted?

Panetta's visit to Afghan base marred by security breach

US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta's visit to Afghanistan was marred by a serious security breach Wednesday when a stolen vehicle was driven onto a runway ramp as the Pentagon chief's plane was landing at a NATO base.

US officials insisted there was no sign the incident at Camp Bastion in the country's south was an attempted attack on Panetta but the carjacking raised questions over security at the fortified base and added to a crisis atmosphere in the NATO-led war effort.

Panetta travelled to Afghanistan just days after a US soldier shot dead 16 villagers -- most of them women and children -- in southern Kandahar province in the worst single such incident since the 2001 US-led invasion.

The suspect in the massacre, a US Army sergeant who had served three tours in Iraq, had been flown out of Afghanistan, Pentagon officials said Wednesday, without saying where he was taken.

The move indicated the suspect would, if charged, be tried in a US military court outside of the war-torn country, despite demands by Afghan political leaders for a public trial in Afghanistan.

The transfer of the shooting suspect could complicate already difficult talks with Kabul on a possible US troop presence after 2014, as President Hamid Karzai's government has so far refused to grant legal immunity to American troops -- the same issue that scuppered a US strategic pact with Iraq.

In the first leg of a two-day visit to Afghanistan, Panetta said recent "troubling" events should not force a change in NATO's war strategy.

Even as Panetta touted progress on the battlefield, officials reported a hijacked vehicle had made it onto a runway ramp where the Pentagon chief's plane was due to park at Camp Bastion in Helmand province.

At about the same time Panetta's aircraft was landing at 11:00 am (0630 GMT), an Afghan civilian hijacked a pick-up truck from a soldier in the coalition force.

He drove the vehicle at high speed before he crashed into a ditch and emerged in flames, Panetta's spokesman George Little told reporters in Kabul.

"Security personnel responded and for reasons that are totally unknown to us at this time, our personnel discovered he was ablaze," Little said.

The flames were extinguished and the Afghan was being treated for serious burn injuries, he said.

Despite Sunday's shooting spree and a series of violent incidents, including unrest over the burning of Korans at a US base last month, President Barack Obama said there were no plans for "sudden" changes to a scheduled timetable for troop withdrawal.

Obama said the United States would stick with the timing agreed with NATO partners, in which Afghan forces take over security for the whole country by the end of 2014.

"I don't anticipate at this stage that we're going to be making any sudden additional changes to the plan that we currently have," Obama told a joint press conference with British Prime Minister David Cameron.

Details of the incident at the Camp Bastion airfield remain unclear.

Officials initially said a member of the NATO-led force was struck and injured by the truck. But a military spokesman in Washington, Captain John Kirby, later said the Afghan wounded the soldier when he hijacked the vehicle. The pick-up truck was driven at high speed "across the ramp near where (Panetta) was to pull up" at the airfield, Kirby told reporters.

No explosives or weapons were found on the Afghan or in the vehicle, he said.

"There is no evidence right now that the driver had any idea who was on that aircraft," Kirby said.

Reporters travelling with Panetta witnessed nothing out of the ordinary during the landing at the base. The secretary went ahead with his scheduled meetings with local Afghan leaders and addressed NATO and Afghan troops at Camp Leatherneck, which adjoins Britain's Camp Bastion.

Panetta then flew to Kabul where he is due to meet Karzai on Thursday.

US officials with Panetta were aware of the incident soon afterwards but waited 10 hours to tell reporters.

Telling children learning is difficult could reduce fear of failure, research finds

WASHINGTON Children may perform better in school and feel more confident about themselves if they are told that failure is a normal part of learning, rather than being pressured to succeed at all costs, according to new research published by the American Psychological Association.

"We focused on a widespread cultural belief that equates academic success with a high level of competence and failure with intellectual inferiority," said Frederique Autin, PhD, a postdoctoral researcher at the University of Poitiers in Poitiers, France. "By being obsessed with success, students are afraid to fail, so they are reluctant to take difficult steps to master new material. Acknowledging that difficulty is a crucial part of learning could stop a vicious circle in which difficulty creates feelings of incompetence that in turn disrupts learning."

The study, published online in APA's Journal of Experimental Psychology: General, could have important implications for teachers, parents and students, said Jean-Claude Croizet, PhD, a psychology professor at the University of Poitiers who supervised the research based on Autin's doctoral dissertation. "People usually believe that academic achievement simply reflects students' inherent academic ability, which can be difficult to change," Croizet said. "But teachers and parents may be able to help students succeed just by changing the way in which the material is presented."

In the first experiment with 111 French sixth graders, students were given very difficult anagram problems that none of them could solve. Then a researcher talked to the students about the difficulty of the problems. One group was told that learning is difficult and failure is common, but practice will help, just like learning how to ride a bicycle. Children in a second group were just asked how they tried to solve the problems. The students then took a test that measures working memory capacity, a key cognitive ability for storing and processing incoming information. Working memory capacity is a good predictor of many aspects of academic achievement, including reading comprehension, problem solving and IQ. The students who were told that learning is difficult performed significantly better on the working memory test, especially on more difficult problems, than the second group or a third control group who took the working memory test without doing the anagrams or discussions with researchers.

A second experiment with 131 sixth graders followed a similar procedure with the difficult anagrams and discussions with a researcher. An additional group of students took a simpler anagram test that could be solved, and this group was not told that learning is difficult. All of the students then completed a reading comprehension test. The children who were told that learning is difficult scored higher than the other groups, including the students who had just succeeded on the simple test. How students think about failure may be more important than their own success when learning challenging skills, the study noted.

A third experiment with 68 sixth graders measured reading comprehension and asked questions that measured students' feelings about their own academic competence. The group that was told that learning is difficult performed better in reading comprehension and reported fewer feelings of incompetence.

The study noted that the students' improvement on the tests most likely was temporary, but the results showed that working memory capacity may be improved simply by boosting students' confidence and reducing their fear of failure. "Our research suggests that students will benefit from education that gives them room to struggle with difficulty," Autin said. "Teachers and parents should emphasize children's progress rather than focusing solely on grades and test scores. Learning takes time and each step in the process should be rewarded, especially at early stages when students most likely will experience failure."
