All the rumors and speculation ends today. Blizzard has confirmed that Diablo III will launch on May 15 around the world.
May 15 will be the day you can head to a store, and most likely queue to purchase your copy. However, Blizzard is allowing you to bypass the hassle of doing that by offering a pre-purchase option via Battle.net. That will translate into a digital download on release day.
Alternatively, Diablo III is currently free if you sign up for the World of Warcraft Annual Pass, which commits you to a year of subscription for the MMO, but still allows you to pay monthly. That offer will end on May 1st, giving you some time to consider it instead of just purchasing Diablo III.
After many delays that saw the game?s release slip from 2011 into early 2012, and then mid-2012, the latest guess was an April 17 launch. However, Blizzard required a bit more time to get rid of the bugs and has settled on a mid-May release.
The fact it?s a worldwide release shows the confidence Blizzard has in its Battle.net back end as thousands of gamers will be installing the game and attempting to login on May 15. Usually a staggered launch is implemented so as not to overload the servers, but it looks like Blizzard believes it can cope.
With the release date now known gamers have one more decision to make: standard or collector?s edition. The standard copy will cost $60, where as the collector?s edition is $100. For that extra $40 you do get an art book, soundtrack CD, behind-the-scenes Blu-ray/DVD, and a copy of Diablo II along with its expansion pack. Tempted?
