I recently added my support to the Prostate Cancer Charity?s calls for a national set of standards of quality prostate cancer care.
The call comes after research indicating that?men affected by prostate cancer?receive different levels of care in different parts of the country.?
This difference also extends to the support provided to friends and families of those affected by the disease.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer in men in Scotland, with around 19,000 men currently living with the disease.? Research suggests that two men in Scotland die of prostate cancer every day.?
That?is why I believe it?s essential we know exactly what people affected by the disease require and expect from our health service.
The draft standards identify the key needs for people affected by prostate cancer, as well as their friends and family.? There is a clear need to provide better information to these people about the disease from diagnosis and treatment through to follow up care.?
I am delighted to back calls for national standards of care, and would urge people with experience of the disease to take part in the consultation.? To find out more about the consultation, and prostate cancer in general, visit the Prostate Cancer Charity Website.
