When ABC viciously canceled my beloved Happy Endings, it seemed a dark time for the network sitcom. But even the blackest night will end with the sun rising and that bright ball of fire in the sky is New Girl. Damon Wayans Jr. was initially meant to star in New Girl as one of Zooey Deschanel?s roommates and even appeared in the pilot as Coach, but a last minute renewal brought him back to Happy Endings. And thank goodness it did because it turned out Happy Endings had so much more to offer than I initially thought. It killed and Wayans Jr. was a large contributor to its hilarity.
But now the show is over and Wayans Jr. is free to do as he pleases with his spare time. And what does he choose to do? He?s heading back to New Girl to reprise his role as Coach, but he won?t suddenly be starring in the show. THR reported Wayans Jr. as only recurring and couldn?t even give an exact number of episodes that he would appear in, only guaranteeing he would be in at least four. It?ll be fun to have him around for a bit. This is wishful thinking, but I would love it if Wayans Jr. could somehow be a part of New Girl fulltime, but that?s insane. New Girl has had its own ratings struggles and might soon find itself in the same position as Happy Endings.
After Wayans Jr. left, Lamorne Morris, and his character Winston, replaced him. While he at first seemed like a poor substitute for Wayans Jr.?s energetic performance, Morris has come into his own, finding ways to make Winston stand out in ways even Wayans Jr. couldn?t mimic. And since the characters of Coach and Winston were friends, we?ll likely get to see the two interacting. I can only imagine how funny those two would be together.
