Ode to a Rock

Ode to a Rock

You lay resting
in the flurry of the waves
in the confusion of
shells and foam
Bunched together,
overlapping like stars
in a galaxy
with those infinitely below you

Your first glimpse
at the sky
as the sands roll back
only for as long
as a gull beats its wing,
I see you

My fingers are drawn
towards a burgundy speck
against a cool constellation
I lift you from your
place in the universe

Your hemispheres
are smooth,
traversed by a black
tangled webs
like the barren
waterways of Mars

I wonder if you came from
smoldering depths
or plummeted into
cold waters, hissing
like a glowing sword
into a vast trough

If it were an
ancient being with eyes,
the world has moved
so slowly,

I drop you
into my pocket
This is the furthest
you have ever traveled in a day
and the furthest you have ventured
in a billion years.
